What to wear for your Family Photo Session

One of the most popular question I get is, “What do I & my family wear to our photo session?” This question can definitely cause some stress but not to worry, I’m here to help! Below you’ll find some helpful wardrobe advice for your photo session.

Whatever makes you feel good is the easy answer!

In a nutshell:

  • The best advice is to choose clothes that you feel comfortable in, and that are simple and neutral as possible.

  • Choose clothes without an illustration, busy pattern, text or logo on.

  • For adults, one plain color is best.

  • Moms, choose clothes with a bit of texture and flow for the most flattering effect.

  • For children, stripes or spots are ok, but they can be a bit distracting if the colors are bold. If you’d rather have something vibrant, go for it!

  • Take your watch & hair ties off beforehand, to give skin a chance to relax and any watch marks to disappear. Watches can be quite distracting in close-ups of you holding your baby. The same goes for hair ties on wrists.

Here’s a little more in-depth information.

  • Dress in clothes that match your family’s personalities If you love to dress up and go out for a night on the town then go fancy. If you are really laid back and sundresses are your thing, that’s really cute, too! Most families fit somewhere in that spectrum.

  • Think about your location. Do you want a beachy vibe? A cozy photo shoot in your home? Maybe a green outdoor background? It’s best to decide this and PICK a location before you do anything else. This will help you decide what type of outfits you want.

  • Comfort truly is THE KEY. Make sure everyone’s clothes fit properly and are not requiring constant adjustment. Don’t wear clothing that wrinkles easily, unless you’re okay with the wrinkles in the photos or want to pay extra to have them digitally lessened/removed. Make sure your bra strap doesn’t keep slipping out and shirts don’t gape open at the buttons when seated.

I’m always happy to offer advice based on my experience – if you have a selection of clothes ready, I can recommend which will work best for your photo session.

I hope you found this helpful, have yourself an amazing photo session!
