What a way to kick start our blog!
Two years ago while I was still a full-time wedding photographer, I photographed a dancer for the first time in my career and because of this one session, everything changed. At that time I had photographed a few concerts and plays and slowly but surely my passion and focus was shifting from weddings to performing arts. It was exciting and new but also very familiar and welcoming. I guess it’s because I come from a family of dancers and all my life I’ve been surrounded by music and dance.
As the time passed and I would have the opportunity to photograph young dancers, I realized that young dancers who have an incredible amount of skills, aren’t really sure how to showcase them in front of a still camera. There are some challenges that comes with creating movement in a still format. One example is that the dancer might be limited on space. Photo studios come in all shapes and sizes, however, in most cases photography studios are a tight fit for dancers so they must know how use the space to its full potential. Another challenge that young dancers face while getting photograph is their lack of knowledge of dancing within the “square”.
When I asked Amanda Irwin, Ballet instructor at South Florida Dance Company what is the biggest challenge that young dancers face when being photographed she said,“I would say the biggest challenge is being able to focus on their placement and their technique at the same time as hitting the pose full out. Knowing the direction your body is facing in a position is very important and helps the photographer get the best possible line out out of the dancer’s pose”
And because of these reasons I wanted to team up with a professional dance instructor and create a workshop where it will introduce the dancers to dance photography and to educate them on the importance of knowing how to dance in the “square”. I teamed up with Amanda Irwin who directed each student on their session, this proofed to be extremely beneficial as the dancers were under the instruction of a greatly skilled dancer who understands how to be photographed. What resulted in this beautiful collaboration was a collection of stunning imagery!
We are excited to show you the incredible girls from South Florida Dance Company.
This was an incredible experience and we are looking forward to the next workshop!
